CROMWELL COLLEGE WATERSPORT CENTRE

ocated on the shores of Lake Dunstan, Cromwell College has established a facility to deliver a range of outdoor education programmes available to the students at Cromwell College and other surrounding schools or groups. 

1 Day Experience Programme;

The primary focus of this programme is to teach water safety and water based recreation skills to people of all ages and abilities.

Living in New Zealand where access to lakes, river and the ocean is readily available, it is important for people to learn how to recreate safely and to develop the skills to enjoy this amazing resource at our fingertips.

McNulty Inlet provides a safe and fun environment for people to experience a range of water sports including Sailing, Kayaking and Stand Up Paddle boarding. The Centre is available for hire to all school and other groups from Year 5 students up.

Dry Hire of the Facility;

The centre and some of the equipment is available for private hire. You can hire the facility for your group and follow the Cromwell College Watersport Centre safety management systems and operate within the recommended safety limits. Please note; we do not provide instructors for a dry hire.

The facility includes;

  • A two story building on the water front.
  • Upstairs there is a double sized classroom equipped with tables, chairs and a whiteboard
  • A large balcony that overlooks McNulty Inlet
  • A full size kitchen which includes fridge/freezer, oven, microwave, cutlery, tea and coffee facilities.
  • Downstairs there is changing rooms, toilets and hot showers
  • Full Size BBQ
  • Access to a boat ramp.
  • The facility is fully fenced for security

The equipment;

  • 90 Lifejackets ranging in sizes
  • 10 Topper Yachts – suitable for one or two learners or experienced students from age 10 to adult.
  • 5 Optimist Yachts – small one person yachts suitable for primary age students.
  • 6 Sunburst Yachts – two-person yacht for intermediate or experienced sailors.
  • 1 Coronet Yacht – This is an open-topped dropped keel yacht, capable of taking up to eight people.
  • 22 Sit on Top Kayaks
  • 20 White water Kayaks
  • 10 Double Sea Kayaks
  • 2 Single Sea Kayaks
  • 9 inflatable Paddle boards
  • 1 Naiad Chase Boat – only to be used by approved/certified boat operators.

Please note; the chase boat and sailing equipment is only to be used when Cromwell College Watersport Centre instructors are facilitating the programme.

Other programmes that are being offered to Cromwell College students for 2022 are as follows;

Cromwell College Year 7 Foundation Course;

This 5 day course is available to all Year 7 students at Cromwell College during Term 1. The focus of this programme is to provide opportunity for students to develop positive relationships with their home room teacher and their peers at the start of the year. They take part in a range of activities that are designed to connect them to their local environment and to our kura.

Nevis: Students learn the school waiata while overlooking Cromwell and then drive into the valley to experience tubing on the Nevis River.

Kawarau: Students get a ride in the chase boat up the Kawarau river where they stop on a sand bank and take part in a range of activities to develop safety around rivers.  Students also experience paddle boarding in Bannockburn inlet and take part in a Rogaine.

Clutha: Students experience sailing and kayaking on Lake Dunstan

Pisa: Students complete an overnight hike in the Pisa range staying at Meadow Lee hut

Cromwell College Year 10 Refocus Programme;

This 10-day course is available to all Year 10 students at Cromwell College in Term 4. This experiential based course focuses on the 3 key areas; community, adventurous journey and self and social responsibility. This programme will be targeted at transitioning students from a junior to a senior school mind set and help them prepare for their first year of NCEA.

Community: Students will be involved in local community projects to give back to their home town.

Adventurous Journey: Students will take part in an overnight trip to learn the skills required for a multi-day expedition. Students will then be involved in the planning and preparing for a 3-day adventurous Journey. Please note this counts towards the Bronze Duke of Ed award.

Self and social responsibility: Students will participate in a range of activities that are designed to allow them to engage positively with their peers, develop confidence, resilience and begin to lead by example.
